Writing Task 1 Diagram

에고...제가 어려워 하는 것 중 하나인 다이아그램에 대해 포스팅 하겠습니다. 모두 에너지이~ 업! 하시고. 

저는 diagram을 볼때마다 한숨이 나옵니다...어허허헛. 거참. 아이엘츠가 어려운 이유가 있다니까요? ㅠㅜ 

우는 소리는 일절만 하고 이제 이 황당하도록 어려운 diagram을 어떻게 설명해야 하는지 살펴보아요^^;;

Diagram은 graph, chart, table과 다릅니다. 일단 사용하는 상용어구도 다를 뿐만 아니라 채점관들이 요구하는 것 또한 틀립니다. 

• describe each important stage in the process and expand where necessary
• link your descriptions of each stage
• use the present simple passive

위에 세가지는 여러분이 반드시 Diagram에서 따라야 하는 지시입니다. 맨 마지막에서 말하는 present simple passive는 다들 아실 거라고 생각합니다. 그래도 예를 들어봅니다.

Graph, Chart, Table은 가령 'was increased'를 썻다면, diagram에서는 present simple passive인 'is combined' 혹은 present simple tense인 combines를 씁니다.

Sample Answer: 

The diagrams illustrates the way in which cement is made and how it is then used in the process of making concrete. Overall, limestone and clay pass through four stages before being bagged ready for use as cement which then accounts for 15% of the four materials used to produce concrete. While the process of making cement uses a number of tools, the production of concrete requires only a concrete mixer.

In the first stage of making cement, limestone and clay are crushed together to form a powder. This powder is then combined in a mixer before passing into a rotating heater which has constant heat applied at one end of the tube. The resulting mixture is ground in order to produce cement. The final product is afterwards put into bags ready to be used.

Regarding the second diagram, concrete consists of mainly gravel, which is small stones, and this makes up 50% of the ingredients. The other materials used are sand (25%), cement (15%) and water (10%). These are all poured into a concrete mixer which continually rotates to combine the materials and ultimately produces concrete. 

Diagram을 설명하는 것은 세가지로 나눠 집니다. 

1. Introduce the diagram

물론 맨 첫 문단은 diagram이 무엇에 관한 건지 설명을 해야 겠죠?

2. Give an overview of the main point/s

무엇에 관한 건지 설명을 한 후에 diagram이 전반적인 과정을 설명합니다. (너무 자세히 설명하면 그 후에 쓸게 없어지니 간단히 설명하면 됩니다.)

3. Give the detail

그 다음으로 자세한 상황을 설명합니다. 

참...이렇게 보면 참 쉬워 보이는 데요 어허헛. 문제는 역시 단어선택인 듯 합니다.

1. Introduction:

아래의 문장은 diagram이 무엇에 관한 건지 설명하고 있습니다. Writing task 1을 받으면 종이에는 지시사항과 함께 무엇에 관해 써야 한다고 설명이 주어지긴 하지만 그것을 그대로 써서는 안됩니다. 그래서 여러분과 저는 paraphrasing이라는 것을 해야 합니다;;

주어진 설명:

The diagram below shows the stages and equipment used in the cement-making process, and how cement is used to produce concrete for building purposes.

Paraphrasing한 설명:

The diagrams illustrates the way in which cement is made and how it is then used in the process of making concrete.

주어진 설명보다 짧아 지긴 했지만 걱정 하지 않으셔도 됩니다. 어차피 diagram에 관한 설명은 길지 않아야 합니다. 중요한 것은 그 후에 쓰여진 main body죠.

2. Overview:

전반적인 과정을 설명하는 오버뷰입니다. 

Overall, limestone and clay pass through four stages before being bagged ready for use as cement which then accounts for 15% of the four materials used to produce concrete. While the process of making cement uses a number of tools, the production of concrete requires only a concrete mixer.

다른 그래프나 챠트와는 다르게 다이아그램은 전반적인 경향이 없습니다. 그래서 저도 처음에는 뭘 써야하나 고민을 많이 했었습니다. 여러분이 전반적인 설명에 넣어야 할것은:

1. the number of stages in the process

2. how it begins and ends

주어진 Diagram을 보면 각각 시멘트와 콘크리트가 만들어지는 과정을 설명합니다. 몇개의 과정이 필요하고, 몇개의 도구들이 쓰여지며, 과정에 전반적으로 뭐가 필요한지에 대해 적혀있습니다. 

3. Details:

이제 각 과정을 설명합니다. 

In the first stage of making cement, limestone and clay are crushed together to form a powder. This powder is then combined in a mixer before passing into a rotating heater which has constant heat applied at one end of the tube. The resulting mixture is ground in order to produce cement. The final product is afterwards put into bags ready to be used.

다음 문단은 맨 처음 과정인 시멘트 만드는 법을 설명하고 있습니다. 가장 첫번째 과정은 limestone과 clay를 crusher를 사용해 가루로 만든다고 하네요. 그리고 이 가루를 mixer에 넣어 튜브 마지막 부분에서 불을 뿜어내고 있는 rotating tube를 지나가게 합니다. 그리고 그 가루를 가는 기구 (grinder)에 올리고 갈면 시멘트가 됩니다. 이제 이 마지막 가루는 자루에 담겨지고 다음 과정에 사용할수 있게 된다고 합니다.

이제 첫번째 시멘트가 만들어지는 과정의 설명이 끝났습니다. 그럼 그 후에 시멘트를 사용해 콘크리트를 만드는 과정이 남았네요.

두번째 diagram을 보면, 컨크리트는 주로 50 퍼센트의 gravel, 작은 돌덩이로 되어있다고 합니다. 그리고 그 뒤로 다른 재료를 설명했네요. 

이 모든 재료들을 계속해서 돌아가며 썩는 콘크리트 믹서기에 넣어 콘크리트를 생산한다고 합니다. 

Diagram을 잘 보며 필요한 단어들을 쓰면서 적어야 합니다. 물론 present simple passive의 문법을 사용하면서 말입니다.

Diagram은 이어지는 설명이기 때문에 좋은 연결 단어가 필요합니다. 

위 Diagram에서 사용되는 in the first stage of나 regarding the second diagram등이 그 예입니다.
